We gathered many interesting items from home ranging from an old gun found in the RIC Barracks in Abbeylara, an army bugle, a ring box from the 1800s, a delph hot water bottle, lots of carpenter tools including a drill. a box camera, a builder's manual from the early1900s, a shoemaker's last, lots of old family photographs, some very old coins in silver and bronze. See Children at Work page for photos
This year we celebrated World Book Day by dressing up as book characters, we had a pair of Red Riding Hoods, a Queen of Hearts, Mary Poppins and Paddington to name but a few.
Following the presentation of the Flag and Procalmation we held a ceremony to celebrate Grandparents Day 2016. See some photos in the Gallery Section below.
We invited Darren and Niall Flynn, Jonathon Mahon and Fintan Creamer to our school as Darren and Niall were crowned World Champion Handballers in the Doubles competition and Jonathon and Niall got to the semi-final stage. The competitions were held in Calgary Canada and we will publish our interview later.
In November we had our inspection of our Digital School of Distinction Award. We are the second school in Co. Longford to receive the reward which is given to a school which gets the children to make full use of computers or laptops in the classroom. The inspectors saw us using maths and reading apps. We all use Reading Eggs. In the senior room we worked on Ordinance Survey maps and we could compare Abbeylara today with a map of Abbeylara in 1836. We can find our own homes on the map too.
